ABOUT

"Hefty ReNew™" are a specialized and innovative solution that addresses the challenge of recycling non-recyclable materials such as chip bags, styrofoam, and plastic utensils. These non-recyclable items have long been a significant source of environmental concern, as they often end up in landfills or as litter, contributing to pollution and harming wildlife.

However, with the introduction of Hefty ReNew™, there is now a way to divert these materials from the waste stream and turn them into a valuable resource. The Hefty ReNew™ program offers an alternative route for these items, ensuring they don't end up in traditional recycling bins, where they might contaminate other recyclables.

The concept behind Hefty ReNew™ is simple but effective. These orange-colored bags are specifically designed to hold non-recyclable materials safely and securely.

If you are already using a container or single-stream recycling service, or if you reside in Omaha with a recycling cart, you have the convenience of putting these orange bags directly into your existing container.

LEARN

The magic happens when these filled Hefty ReNew™ are collected and taken to specialized recycling facilities. At these facilities, the bags are processed using advanced techniques. Instead of trying to recycle the items directly, which is often challenging due to their composition, the Hefty ReNew™ are sent to energy recovery facilities. There, the non-recyclable materials are converted into valuable energy resources through a process called "waste-to-energy" conversion.

The waste-to-energy conversion process typically involves the controlled burning of the non-recyclable materials, which generates heat and steam. This heat energy can then be used to produce electricity or to power industrial processes. Through this innovative approach, Hefty ReNew™ provide an environmentally responsible solution for dealing with hard-to-recycle waste while also contributing to sustainable energy production.

By participating in the Hefty ReNew™ program, individuals and communities play a vital role in reducing the environmental impact of non-recyclable materials. It not only diverts waste from landfills but also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing waste as a valuable energy source. Additionally, this initiative raises awareness about the importance of responsible waste management and promotes a circular economy, where resources are conserved and repurposed to minimize waste generation.

Final Thoughts

Our Take: it’s great to have this resource, but none of us want to give the plastic industry the excuse to keep making these crummy plastics in the first place, so avoid non-recyclable single-use products when possible.

Where to Get: You can purchase 8-gallon bags at most grocery stores, including Menards, or you can purchase 30 and 55-gallon bags directly from First Star.

If you already have our container or single-stream recycling service (or you’re an Omaha resident with a recycling cart), you can just put those orange bags directly into your container.
