Elmwood Aksarben Neighborhood
A note from your neighborhood organizer Brian Tipton …
Because the City of Omaha isn’t composting our yard waste, the Elmwood Aksarben neighborhood is taking collective action by partnering with the area’s only commercial composting company, Hillside Solutions. We’re 1 of 2 neighborhood’s testing out a pilot program that Hillside hopes to scale to other communities later this fall. So by participating, you’re leading the charge for sustainability in Omaha!
Can you describe this program in a (compostable) nutshell?
For a small monthly fee, you & participating neighbors are assigned a drop-off location. There you’ll find green 64-gallon totes. You’ll open the lid, place your items inside (no plastic bags), and then close the lid shut.
Hillside will empty & sanitize the totes every week, then process your waste into nutrient-dense soil at their Ashland farm. Then every 6 months, you get some of the soil back!
We negotiated special pilot pricing, so Hillside’s offering a 40% discount off their normal Compost Club membership of $8.99/month, making our fee $5.39/month for the first 35 people that sign up! After the first 35 members, it will be $8.99/month for the rest.
At Hillside’s commercial facility — anything that nature created like meat, dairy, bones; paper towels & 7 PLA/BPI certified service-ware; coffee grounds/filters — even pet waste (inside compostable bags)!
Info on storing & transporting your materials from home, plus a full list of compostable items on the Member’s Page.
Due to space limitations, no yard waste.
Sweet, but what about my yard waste?
Extra amazing member amenity: You can self-haul an unlimited amount of yard waste to Hillside/Soil Dynamics’ Downtown Yard at 1725 Ave G, Omaha, NE 68110, which is the same place where you’ll pick up your soil.
How do I sign up?

Can I host a tote at my house?
Once existing drop-off points are full, we’ll be granting requests for others to host. To be eligible, you must have a space that is accessible 24/7, room for 2 or more totes, and live in the Elmwood Aksarben neighborhood. The more totes you can host, the more eligible you become.
